He has practised as counsel in international commercial and maritime disputes for over 30 years, developing particular expertise in -
- Shipbuilding, where his experience borders on the encyclopaedic, covering all manner of ships, every type of dispute (regulatory, technical, contractual, legal and guarantee) and instructions from overseas lawyers as well as English solicitors
- Offshore construction, including rigs, drillships and pipelines
- Dry shipping disputes of all kinds
- Marine casualties: James is one of a handful of true specialists in ship collisions
His arbitral appointments largely reflect his practice as counsel and include cases where the substantive or curial law is not English.
