Mr Smith KC has been involved in shipping and arbitration work throughout his professional career since completing pupillage in 1990. He has been involved in many leading shipping and arbitration cases, most recently representing GAFTA in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom in seminal case of Halliburton v Chubb.
Mr Smith's shipping practice involves both wet and dry shipping. He has extensive experience of salvage and collision cases as well as charterparty and bill of lading disputes and ship construction disputes.
Mr Smith has been accepting appointments as arbitrator for over 20 years and have written awards as sole arbitrator and as part of a panel of 3 arbitrators. His appointments range from yacht collision cases to charterparty disputes. Currently, Mr Smith has 7 live appointments which vary from a claim for damages for repudiatory breach of a long term bare boat charterpartry to a claim for damages for breach of an MYBA super yacht charterparty and include a safe port claim, claims under a sale and purchase contract and claims under charterparty guarantees.
